The 139th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) kicked off on April 15 in Guangzhou, setting new records with over 32,000 exhibitors and a total exhibition area of 1.55 million square meters. As a barometer of China's foreign trade, this edition placed strong emphasis on innovation, green development, and intelligence ("new, green, smart"), resonating deeply with the furniture and accessories sector.

Technological Innovation Fuels Product Upgrades

In the furniture components halls, green materials and smart technologies were on full display. One company showcased ‌biodegradable plastic connectors‌ made from plant-based polymers, offering comparable strength to conventional plastics while fully decomposing in natural environments. Another introduced ‌smart damping hinges‌ embedded with sensors that automatically adjust resistance based on door-opening speed and angle, significantly extending product lifespan.

These "green and smart" innovations became major sales drivers. Preliminary data shows that ‌intent-to-purchase agreements in the furniture components section surged by 35%‌ compared to the previous session, with over 60% attributed to environmentally friendly products. Smart hardware sales nearly doubled, reflecting a clear shift in global buyer preferences.

Strong Market Response and Rising Order Values

The buyer profile at this year's fair was notably diverse, including not only global giants like Walmart and Sainsbury's but also a growing number of SMEs from emerging economies. These buyers seek both cost-efficiency and reliable customization capabilities.

In response, many suppliers offered ‌flexible small-batch production‌ with lead times as short as 15 days, while others provided end-to-end solutions from design to delivery. Such strategies have been well received. A Zhejiang-based supplier secured over ‌$2 million in orders within four days‌, covering smart locks and eco-friendly hardware. "Repeat customers are placing additional orders on-site, and new clients are signing long-term contracts," said the company's sales director. Average order value rose by approximately 10%, underscoring market recognition of premium, value-added products.

Industry Transformation Accelerates

Beyond transactions, the Canton Fair served as a platform for technical exchange and strategic insight. At the "Green and Intelligent Development Forum for the Furniture Industry," experts and entrepreneurs shared best practices in sustainable production and digital management.

Many exhibitors noted that interactions with peers revealed new R&D directions and operational improvements. Moving forward, companies plan to deepen investment in innovation, enhance green and smart features, and optimize supply chain efficiency.

The 139th Canton Fair has injected strong momentum into the furniture components industry. Guided by the "new, green, smart" trend, the sector is advancing toward high-quality development. As environmental awareness grows and intelligent technologies mature, the global market will see an increasing supply of efficient, sustainable, and intelligent furniture solutions.
