What Is Shelf Support?

In simple terms, a shelf support is any component or device that holds a shelf in place and bears its weight.

There are many types of shelf supports, including:

Brackets: L-shaped pieces (often metal) that are screwed to a wall. The shelf then rests on the horizontal arm of the bracket.

Pins / Pegs: Small rods that are inserted into pre-drilled holes in the vertical panels of a bookcase or cabinet. The shelf rests on top of these pins.

Clips: Often used for glass shelves, these clips grip the edge of the glass and are fastened to the wall or cabinet.

Standards and Brackets: This is a two-part system common in closets and garages.

Standard: A long, vertical metal track with slots, mounted to the wall.

Bracket: The actual support arm that hooks into the slots on the standard. This allows for adjustable shelf height.

Fixed Supports: In some furniture, supports are built-in, like wooden strips or slots routed directly into the side panels that the shelf slides into.
