How to Manufacture Hinges

Manufacturing hinges involves eight steps. The following is a general step-by -step guide to manufacturing standard hinges, which are often used for doors and cabinets.

1. Design & Material Selection

Hinge specifications: Size, finish and load capacity, etc.

Material: Steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminum, etc.

2. Cutting the Metal

Sheet metal hinges: Using laser cutting, punch press and shearing.

Forged hinges: Headed metal is pressed into shape in order to get extra strength.

3. Forming the Knuckle

The knuckle is the hollow tube where the hinge pin is inserted.

4. Creating the Leaf Plates

Stamping, bending and machining

5. Joining the Leaves with the Knuckle

6. Finishing & Coating

Deburring, polishing and plating

7. Quality Control

Functional testing, load testing and corrosion testing

8. Packaging & Distribution
