Here are the main application areas of petrochemical products in furniture fittings and manufacturing:

Plastic Furniture and Components: This is the most common application.

ABS Resin (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is used extensively for manufacturing chair shells, sofa armrests, drawer fronts, and other furniture parts due to its high impact resistance and high gloss finish.

Polyolefins like Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) are used to make chairs, tables, storage boxes, and various functional fittings.

PVC can be mixed with wood flour (MDF powder) to create a composite material known as "wood-plastic composite," which combines the look of wood with the durability of plastic, making it ideal for outdoor furniture (e.g., park benches, patio sets).

Faux Leather and Upholstery Materials: The faux leather used for sofas, office chairs, and headboards is also derived from petroleum.

Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) laminates can be made into furniture coverings (surface leather) that are more weather-resistant and temperature-resistant than traditional PVC leather and contain fewer plasticizers.

Polyurethane (PU) is widely used to create the foam filling for upholstered furniture, such as the cushioning in sofas and mattresses.

Adhesives and Solvents: Adhesives are crucial in furniture assembly.

Hydrocarbon solvents (e.g., Ezolem™ 6/7) extracted from petroleum are important components in furniture adhesives, ensuring strong bonds for veneers, edge banding, and more.

Basic raw materials like ethylene and propylene are also key to producing various synthetic adhesives.

Surface Finishes and Coatings: The paints, coatings, and varnishes on furniture surfaces rely on petrochemicals.

Propylene is used in the production of furniture coatings and paints.

Benzene is a key raw material for synthetic resins used in various furniture lacquers and coatings.

Specialized industrial additives (like JEFFOX® WL-5000) are also applied in furniture production.

Other Auxiliary Materials: There are other, less obvious petroleum-based products used in furniture making. For example, paraffin wax, derived from petroleum, can be used in the production of engineered wood (like particleboard) , playing an important role during the board forming process.

In summary, even if you choose solid wood furniture, the glossy paint on its surface, the strong glue at the joints, and even consumables like sandpaper are very likely derived from petrochemical products. Petrochemical materials have become deeply integrated into every aspect of modern furniture manufacturing.
