Origins and Significance

 

Taoist Origin: The name "Shangyuan" comes from Taoism, where the festival is considered the birthday of the "Heavenly Official" (Tianguan), who is responsible for good fortune . "Shang" refers to the heavens, and on this day, families would worship to pray for safety and good luck .

 

Historical Roots: Celebrations on this day date back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty. It was also promoted by Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty, who ordered lanterns lit in palaces and temples to honor Buddha .

 

Symbolic Meaning: The festival represents reunion, harmony, and the letting go of the past as people look forward to the future with new hope, illuminated by the light of lanterns
