Selecting suitable casters for furniture is all about balancing load capacity, floor compatibility and practical needs, which ensures both mobility and durability.
First and foremost, prioritize load capacity. Calculate the total weight of the furniture plus its maximum load, then divide it by the number of casters. To be safe, each caster should bear 1.2 times the calculated weight. For example, a 150kg single sofa with four casters requires each caster to hold at least 45kg. Overlooking this will lead to caster deformation or breakage over time.
Next, match casters to your floor type. For hard floors like wooden boards and tiles, polyurethane (PU) or rubber casters are ideal-they operate quietly and won't scratch the surface. Nylon casters are more suitable for rough cement floors due to their excellent wear resistance. For carpeted areas, opt for swivel casters with wide wheel surfaces to avoid getting stuck in the carpet fibers.
Then, choose the right caster type based on usage scenarios. Fixed casters work best for furniture that only moves straight, such as filing cabinets. Swivel casters offer 360-degree rotation, perfect for sofas, coffee tables and other pieces that need flexible movement. For safety in kids' rooms or kitchens, select swivel casters with brakes to prevent accidental sliding.
Finally, check the fitting details. Verify that the caster's screw or clamping plate matches the mounting holes on the furniture bottom. Also, consider the caster height to ensure the furniture stays at a comfortable height after installation.
By following these guidelines, you can pick casters that enhance your furniture's functionality and lifespan.
