Effect of PVC Content on PVC Edge Banding Strips

PVC resin acts as the matrix of edge banding strips, while calcium carbonate (calcium powder) serves as the main filler. Higher PVC content means a lower proportion of calcium powder, delivering better toughness, processability and durability at a higher cost. Conversely, lower PVC content comes with more calcium powder to cut costs, yet the material becomes brittle and prone to various processing defects.

Common market ranges:

High grade: approx. 60%~75% PVC resin, low calcium powder

Standard grade: approx. 45%~55% PVC

Low-end grade: only about 35% PVC, with calcium powder exceeding 50%

1. Mechanical Properties and Toughness

✅ High PVC content: High tensile strength and elongation at break. Resistant to whitening upon bending and brittle fracture at low temperatures, good impact resistance. Suitable for soft-forming curved edge sealing and less likely to crack during rework. ❌ Low PVC content (high calcium powder): Loose internal structure of the substrate. Whitens when bent, prone to cracking under external force. Easily snaps during storage and transportation in cold weather.

2. Trimming Performance on Edge Banding Machines (Critical for Manufacturers)

✅ High PVC: Smooth trimming with good cut surface gloss. Dark-coloured edge banding rarely shows white marks after trimming, and tool wear is slow. ❌ Low PVC: Tends to chip and form white trimming marks. Hard calcium powder rapidly wears cutting tools, requiring frequent tool sharpening. This defect is highly noticeable on dark woodgrain edge banding.

3. Surface Texture, Gloss and Printing

✅ High PVC: Dense substrate with fine surface. Good adhesion of UV coating, sharp wood grain printing, less prone to paint peeling and ink loss. ❌ Low PVC: Rough and porous surface. Surface coating tends to fall off; printed patterns appear faint, and ink may wear off over time.

4. Thermal Processing and Thermal Stability

✅ High PVC: Good melt strength. Resists stretching and deformation during preheating for edge banding; stable thermal shrinkage and consistent curvature for soft forming. ❌ Low PVC: Poor melt strength, easy to stretch and deform when heated. Significant thermal expansion and contraction, which may cause edge warping after application.

5. Aging Resistance and Moisture Resistance

✅ High PVC: Continuous resin phase provides better barrier performance, superior moisture, acid and alkali resistance. Resists discoloration and powdering in long-term use. ❌ Low PVC: Large amount of calcium powder dispersed in the matrix, allowing easier penetration of moisture. Likely to chalk and develop surface powder after long service.

6. Cost and Density

✅ Lower PVC content reduces raw material cost. Calcium powder has high density, so low-PVC edge banding is heavier at the same thickness. ❌ PVC resin is expensive, so high-PVC formulations carry higher material costs.
