I. What is Back Adhesive for PVC Edge Banding
Back adhesive for PVC edge banding, also commonly known as pre-coated adhesive or back coating adhesive, is a pre-applied adhesive layer coated on the bonding surface of PVC edge banding and panels in advance. Its core function is to replace the on-site gluing process of edge banding machines, enabling rapid bonding between PVC edge banding and panels (particleboard, MDF, plywood, etc.) through heating and pressing, making it a key supporting material for edge banding in panel furniture manufacturing.
II. Core Types and Characteristics of Back Adhesive
There are two main types of back adhesive for PVC edge banding in the industry, which adapt to different edge banding processes and equipment with significant performance differences:
Hot Melt Adhesive Type (Most Mainstream)This is the preferred back adhesive for current furniture edge banding, with EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer), PO (Polyolefin), and PUR (Polyurethane Reactive Hot Melt Adhesive) as core base materials. It is a solid adhesive film at room temperature, becomes viscous when melted at 150-200℃, and cures rapidly after cooling to achieve bonding.
EVA Back Adhesive: Low cost, good fluidity, compatible with conventional edge banding machines, the mainstream choice for mid-to-low-end furniture. However, it has average temperature and water resistance, and is prone to debonding in high-temperature environments;
PO Back Adhesive: Better temperature resistance and aging resistance than EVA, with higher bonding strength, suitable for mid-range and some high-end furniture, with slightly higher requirements for temperature control of edge banding machines;
PUR Back Adhesive: High-end back adhesive, forming an irreversible chemical cross-linked structure after curing. It has extremely strong water, temperature and weather resistance, with bonding strength 2-3 times that of EVA, suitable for high-end custom furniture and kitchen & bathroom furniture (high humidity and temperature scenarios). It requires special edge banding equipment and has a relatively high cost.
Water-based Adhesive Type (For Niche Scenarios)Mainly composed of water-based polyurethane and water-based acrylic, it is liquid at room temperature, forms a film after drying, and is reactivated for bonding during edge banding. It has excellent environmental performance and no solvent volatilization, but slow curing speed and lower bonding strength than hot melt adhesive. It is only suitable for low-speed edge banding processes, mostly used in small-batch production of environmentally friendly furniture with strict VOC emission requirements, and has less industrial application.
III. Key Technical Indicators of Back Adhesive
Coating Weight: The conventional coating weight of back adhesive for PVC edge banding is 15-30g/㎡, and high-end PUR back adhesive can be as low as 10-15g/㎡. Insufficient coating weight tends to cause poor bonding, while excessive coating weight leads to adhesive overflow and panel contamination;
Activation Temperature: The activation temperature of EVA back adhesive is 160-180℃, PO back adhesive 180-200℃, and PUR back adhesive 120-160℃, which need to match the heating module of the edge banding machine;
Initial Tack and Holding Power: Initial tack determines the bonding stability at the moment of edge banding, and holding power reflects the long-term bonding strength. High-end back adhesive needs to balance both;
Weather Resistance: Including temperature resistance (no debonding at -20℃~80℃), water resistance and aging resistance. Back adhesive for kitchen and bathroom furniture must pass the 72-hour boiling test without delamination.
IV. Correlation Between Back Adhesive and Edge Banding Process, Product Quality
Process Adaptation: PVC edge banding without back adhesive requires on-site gluing by edge banding machines, with low efficiency and poor adhesive layer uniformity. Pre-coated back adhesive edge banding can be directly put into the machine, improving edge banding speed by more than 30%, with more uniform adhesive layer thickness and reduced problems of adhesive overflow and lack of adhesive;
Quality Impact: High-quality back adhesive has strong adhesion to PVC edge banding and panels, with no edge opening or warping after edge banding, and is not easy to fall off after long-term use. Inferior back adhesive is prone to brittle cracking at low temperature and softening at high temperature, leading to edge banding failure;
Environmental Performance: High-end hot melt back adhesive (solvent-free PUR, food-grade EVA) complies with EU REACH and domestic E0/E1 environmental standards, with no release of formaldehyde or heavy metals, suitable for the production of children's furniture and environmentally friendly furniture.
